PILI Mourns the Passing of Roslyn Lieb

Roslyn Lieb (second from right) with members of the PILI Board of Directors.

PILI Life Director and former PILI Executive Director, Roslyn “Roz” Lieb, passed away in November 2023.

A graduate of DePaul University College of Law, Roz led several public interest law organizations in Chicago, including the Just the Beginning Foundation and PILI itself. For nearly ten years before that, she served as the Executive Director of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. While there, Roz began the bias crimes and school reform projects.

In her legal practice, Roz focused on matters involving housing and employment discrimination. Of particular note was Latinos United v. HUD and CHA, a case that opened up the public housing programs to underserved Latinos. She had also been appointed by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals to handle appeals in cases involving employment and prisoners’ rights issues.

Roz served as PILI’s Executive Director from 1997-2004 and began PILI’s Pro Bono Initiative among other accomplishments. Roz also served on the PILI Board of Directors prior to becoming Executive Director, serving as president from 1995-1997. Upon her departure from PILI as Executive Director, Roz was appointed as a Life Director for her significant contributions to PILI and public interest law. She served in that role until her passing.

Roz is survived by her sons, Laurence and Mark, and her grandchildren, Kathryn, Nicholas, and Annie. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Michael, who passed away in August 2022.

“The PILI Board of Directors and staff are saddened by Roz’s passing and thankful for her commitment to PILI and public interest law,” said PILI Executive Director Michael Bergmann. “Roz was a beloved person and leader in the public interest law community. She will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her.”

Support PILI with a Year End Gift

Thanks to the PILI community, PILI has been able to do more than ever over the past year to engage, inspire and empower those advancing equal access to justice. PILI has lived out this year’s theme of A Community of Service by connecting people who can help – law students, recent law school graduates, lawyers and legal professionals – with the individuals, families and communities who need help.

Here are some of the highlights from our work over the past year:

  • 113 Law Student Interns and Graduate Fellows added an additional 37,100 hours of legal assistance and advocacy to serve 2,102 clients across the state.
  • 3,782 clients received free civil legal assistance from 312 of PILI’s pro bono volunteers, including through Illinois Free Legal Answers.
  • We implemented the first of two planned stipend increases for our Law Student Interns to meet the rising cost of living.

You can learn about all of our work and impact over the last year in our 2023 Year in Review.

With your continued support, in the year to come we will:

  • Fund our largest number of Law Student Interns ever while also implementing the second step of our cost-of-living stipend increase. Summer Interns will now receive $6,500 for 400 hours of work, and school-year Interns will receive $3,500 for 200 hours.
  • Fill in the gaps of available civil legal services throughout the state through a variety of innovative and necessary pro bono projects assisting veterans, seniors, families and others in need; and
  • Provide training and resources for law students, pro bono volunteers and pro bono programs to increase the availability of pro bono legal help for those who cannot afford an attorney.

One member of the PILI community explained why they volunteer: “We have a duty as practitioners to use our legal skills to help those less fortunate. Practicing law comes with many privileges and grants us knowledge and power. We should use those skills to help individuals who may not have the same leverage.”

Your gift will help us grow and sustain our Community of Service, where the legal community works together to ensure equal access to justice is accessible for all people with unmet legal needs. Will you help our Community of Service thrive by making a donation today?

Thank You for Celebrating Pro Bono Week 2023!

During and around the week of October 22nd to 28th, PILI participated in the national celebration of Pro Bono Week. Celebrated annually and organized nationally by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, Pro Bono Week is intended to inspire even greater pro bono participation by lawyers throughout the nation.

PILI celebrated with a variety of events across the state over the course of several weeks, bringing together hundreds of pro bono advocates. We also recognized six local attorneys and one law firm through several of our Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committees for their outstanding pro bono work during events held throughout the week. Congratulations to our award recipients! Our team was on hand as well for the CBA YLS’ 29th Annual Pro Bono & Community Service Fair.

We also celebrated Pro Bono Week with some of our partners by doing pro bono! PILI held several Illinois Free Legal Answers clinics across the state, including at State Farm as part of a multi-state clinic, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Deere & Company, DePaul University College of Law, Southern Illinois University Law School and with our Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee. Through these clinics, over 60 civil legal questions from those in need were answered, which makes a big difference.

In the Third Judicial Circuit, MillerKing LLC received the Pro Bono Service Award.

As a firm, Miller King does pro bono work for Land of Lincoln, PILI, Catholic Charities, the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and as assigned by the law library. This work includes obtaining divorces and parenting plans; securing maintenance, child support, and money judgments; drafting wills and powers of attorney; obtaining a presumptive death certificate; acting as a mediator and GAL; and providing consultations to survivors of domestic violence. The attorneys also take an active role in the community, donating their time and professional advice to causes and organizations such as Catholic Children’s Home Advisory board, Knights of Columbus, the Riverbend Growth Association Young Adults Committee, Red Mass, Junior Explorers Football Club, and other not-for-profit organizations.

In the Third Judicial Circuit, Brianna Pierson received the Judge Barbara Crowder Pro Bono Champion Award.

Brianna Pierson is a JusticeCorps Fellow in Madison County through the Illinois Bar Foundation. Brianna has proven to be an invaluable asset to the Law Library and directing patrons to pro bono resources.  She is credited with the Law Library and Legal Self-Help Center’s ability to maintain the same service levels many of the patrons have grown accustomed to during a brief period of turnover. She regularly assists with making pro bono referrals and directing self-represented litigants to the Legal Advice Clinic.

This was the inaugural presentation of this award named after Judge Barbara Crowder (Ret.) who served as chair of PILI’s Third Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee from its launch in 2011 until her retirement. The award is presented to a courthouse staff person or member of the judiciary who demonstrate their support for pro bono in the courthouse on a regular basis.

Donna Davis serves as Associate General Counsel for the University of Illinois Foundation in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Donna provides legal advice and representation to the University of Illinois Foundation, including the Board of Directors, Executive Officers, and Professional Staff. Tami also volunteers for the PILI Self-Represented Litigant Help Desks in Peoria and Tazewell Counties as well as helping those with family law questions through Illinois Free Legal Answers. Her attention to detail, preparation and knowledge of pertinent case law ensure that her clients receive the answers and assistance they need, and she is a model for pro bono in the community.

PILI has recently received renewed funding from several funders. We are so grateful for their continued support of PILI’s mission to engage, inspire and empower those advancing equal access to justice.

PILI has received a renewed grant of $12,000 from the CFCI Community Needs Grant of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois.
