PILI Mourns Passing of John E. Clay

John E. Clay, 93, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Sarasota, FL. John was one of PILI’s founders and he served until his passing as a Life Director on PILI’s Board of Directors. He was a former president of the Board of Directors and a former Executive Director of PILI. We are so very thankful for all of John’s contributions and extend our deepest condolences to his family. John’s obituary is below.

John Clay Obituary PhotoJohn E. Clay
November 27, 1921 – October 17, 2015

John E. Clay, civil rights advocate, environmental activist, humanitarian, word maven, author, tree farmer, log cabin builder, mountain climber, skier, loving husband and father died in Sarasota shortly before his 94th birthday of congestive heart failure. Passionate about living life fully, genuinely interested in other people’s lives and endeavors, he retained to the end an inspiring vitality and engagement with life. John’s many friends and family remember his enthusiasm for doing the “impossible” and he did so many times in his long life.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, a graduate of Carleton College and Harvard Law School, John was a senior partner in the Chicago law firm Mayor, Brown and Platt until his retirement in 1988. At that time he was also the President of the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) in Chicago. He resigned as President and was hired as the first Executive Director of PILI. In this new role, John expanded the reach and positive impact of PILI’s programs on the lives of many people who could not have otherwise had access to legal services.

In 1952, John helped to convince Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois to run for President as part of a genuine “draft Adlai” movement. In 1968, he became chairman of a Chicago group that strongly supported Senator Eugene McCarthy’s first bid for President, which convinced President Johnson not to seek re-election due to strong opposition to the Vietnam War. When McCarthy ran again, in 1976, he picked John Clay as his running mate in Illinois. Their ticket received 60,000 votes.

In 2000, John published his book of words “by, for and against our presidents from Washington to Clinton” entitled “Snollygosters, Airheads and Wimps,” with a foreward by his longtime friend Eugene McCarthy.

John is cherished by his wife of 42 years, Mary Dailey, his two sons Peter and Scott (Katherine Mitchell), his daughter Anna McCann (David McCann) and grandchildren Brenton Clay, Andrew Clay, Nicholas McCann, Katherine McCann and Michael McCann.

Donations in honor of John’s life may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union or the Public Interest Law Initiative.

PILI Receives $4,000 Grant from Community Foundation of Central Illinois

PILI has received a new grant of $4,000 from the CFCI ComunityWorks Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois. This grant will support PILI’s Law Student Internship Program, and will specifically help fund an Intern in Peoria.

PILI Law Student Interns work at legal service agencies for 400 hours during the summer or 200 hours during a school year semester. PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced agency attorneys, and providing extra educational, networking and mentoring opportunities. There are currently four summer Internship opportunities outside of Chicago at Prairie State Legal Services in Peoria and Rock Island, and at Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in Alton and Champaign.

“I loved my Internship,” said a 2015 Intern. “I am so grateful for the opportunity and support from PILI and I hope more people not from Chicago are able to take advantage of the program. It’s really a fantastic way to try out public interest law as opposed to other unpaid Internships, or externships that students have to pay for.”

PILI is grateful to the Community Foundation of Central Illinois for their support!

PILI Featured in Chicago Daily Law Bulletin Article on Internship Stipend Increase

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin recently published an article on PILI’s Internship stipend increase. PILI is raising its stipend from the first time in over a decade, from $5,000 to $5,500 in the summer of 2016, with the ultimate goal of raising the stipend to $6,000 in 2018.

PILI Executive Director, Michael Bergmann, was quoted in the article:

“We committed ourselves to raising the amount of the intern stipend so that more law students can gain the skills, experience and networks they need to build successful careers in the public interest without adding to their law school debt.”

PILI Welcomes Three New Board Members

At our most recent board meeting on September 30, 2015 the PILI Board of Directors elected several new members. Those elected to serve include Cara Hendrickson, the Chief of the Public Interest Division for the Office of the Illinois Attorney General, Lindsay Miller, a staff attorney at the Roger Baldwin Foundation of ACLU, Inc., and Phillip Mohr, the Deputy Director of Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation (CVLS). Each of these attorneys have had impressive legal careers with demonstrated commitments to public interest law.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Cara Hendrickson was a 2001 PILI Graduate Fellow at Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI). She then worked at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, then as a law clerk and eventually as a Skadden Fellow back at BPI. After her Skadden Fellowship, Cara became a partner at Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym, Ltd. where she worked as a civil rights attorney for over eight years. Now, Cara puts her cross-sector collaboration skills to use as the Chief of the Public Interest Division for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Lindsay Miller was a Root-Tilden Kern Public Interest Scholar at the New York University School of Law. She has worked on civil liberties and institutional reform cases since becoming a Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Illinois in 2013, and she also supervises PILI Law Student Interns and Graduate Fellows. Prior to law school, she worked as a special education and middle school math and science teacher in Miami-Dade, Florida.

Phillip Mohr graduated from DePaul University College of Law, and was a volunteer at CVLS before he began working there in 1991. He became the Family Law Director in 1996 and the Deputy Director in 2006. Phillip manages his own caseload in addition to training and tutoring volunteers. He is also the Supervising Attorney for PILI’s Interns and Fellows.

PILI’s Board of Directors is currently led by President Richard O’Malley, Jr. of Sidley Austin LLP, and by Vice President Bradley G. Lane of Brinks Gilson & Lione.

PILI Announces Alumni Network Leadership Council Changes

September began a new fiscal year for PILI, and with that came changes to the Alumni Network Leadership Council. Elizabeth Lewis was recently elected to PILI’s Board of Directors and has stepped down as Chair after a two-year term. In her place, Vice Chair Kate Pomper Costello has been named Chair, and Jordan Heinz will serve as Vice Chair. Elizabeth will stay on the Council for one more year as Immediate Past Chair.

Kate Pomper Costello is an Assistant Attorney at the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and had served as a PILI Law Student Intern at the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. Jordan Heinz is a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP and was a “Double PILI,” having served as both a PILI Law Student Intern and a PILI Graduate Fellow at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.

We are so grateful for Elizabeth, Kate and Jordan and the service they, and the rest of the Alumni Network Leadership Council, give to PILI!
