Every Monday in April, we will be posting about different aspects of PILI’s Alumni Network as we introduce our Alumni Class Representative.

PILI’s mission is to cultivate a lifelong commitment to public interest law and pro bono service. To help Alumni of our Internship and Fellowship Programs fulfill their own commitment to service, PILI’s Alumni Network organizes service opportunities for Alumni to do together.
PILI’s Legal Prep Community Law Clinic: Volunteers Needed Now!
PILI partners with Legal Prep Charter Academies, a legal-themed charter school, and with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services to provide a monthly community-based clinic at Legal Prep in the Garfield Park neighborhood. PILI Alumni volunteers provide pro bono services to families of students and to others in the area on all civil, non-fee generating, non-class action cases. Types of cases can include eviction, consumer debt, foreclosure, adult or child guardianship, and more. Learn more about the Legal Prep Community Law Clinic ».
We are seeking volunteers for the next Community Law Clinic, which will be on Monday, May 2nd at 5:30 p.m. If you are in the Chicago area and interested in volunteering, sign up here.
This is an ongoing, monthly service opportunity. The clinic is usually held on the second Tuesday of every month, so even if you can’t make this clinic in May, there will be other chances throughout the year – stay tuned!
Alumni Network Service Day with the Elder Law & Wellness Initiative:
In addition to the Legal Prep Clinic, PILI’s Alumni Network plans other one-time service opportunities with different organizations in the area. This summer, PILI will be doing a CLE training and clinic with the Elder Law and Wellness Initiative (ELWI), a nonprofit that is part of the Elder Justice Court Support Program. ELWI operates a free legal clinic for seniors, providing legal and social service information to people who are over sixty and their caregivers. The training and clinic will happen on August 24th from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers will receive 1.0 hours of MCLE credit for the training, and lunch will be provided. This is a discrete pro bono opportunity, and volunteers are not expected to work with their clients beyond the clinic date.

PILI’s Alumni Network Teams:
PILI’s Alumni Network has a Public Service Team that plans these service projects. There’s also a Program Planning Team, an Outreach Team, and a Fundraising Team. PILI is always looking for new Alumni to join one of these four teams. Learn more about each of our Alumni Teams, or get in touch with Program Manager Katie Pieper if you’re interested in getting involved.
We hope to see you at one of these upcoming service opportunities! Using your legal skills and knowledge to make the world a better place is what PILI is all about!
