PILI is pleased to partner with the Illinois Bar Foundation in support of its 2023 Week of Service. As part of that effort, PILI will present two CLE programs focused on how to help veterans and members of the military with certain legal issues they may face. These programs are also being offered in conjunction with PILI’s Virtual Pro Bono CLE Series.
Join us for the first installment of our CLE mini-series on serving veteran clients, co-sponsored by the Illinois Bar Foundation in commemoration of its Week of Service. At this 1.5-hour virtual CLE, attendees will hear a brief overview of the Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network and ways to volunteer. Our first speaker will discuss military structure and culture to help you gain a better understanding of your pro bono clients’ perspectives, and then you will learn about the legal rights and benefits veterans are entitled to and how you guide them in obtaining those benefits and rights. This CLE will help lawyers “issue-spot” benefits related issues their veteran clients may face and identify when those issues must be handled by a VA accredited attorney. This training will be helpful for any attorney who works with veteran clients, including volunteers on Illinois Free Legal Answers or through the Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network (IL-AFLAN), to help spot clients who may be victims and know where to refer them for help.
This CLE will feature special guest speakers Yelena Duterte, Director of the Veterans Legal Clinic of UIC School of Law and Trevor Orsinger, Orsinger Law Group
Advance registration is required to receive Zoom link. Attendees will receive 1.0 hours of General MCLE Credit subject to approval.
These Virtual Pro Bono CLE Series programs are free, but advance registration is required and we ask that you do at least one of the following over the next 12 months:
- Answer two Illinois Free Legal Answers questions for every hour of CLE Credit;
- Volunteer with Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network (IL-AFLAN) through PILI (101 counties outside of Cook) or Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (Cook County);
- Sign up for one shift at a Self-Represented Litigant Help Desk (Third, Sixth & Tenth Circuits);
- Take one pro bono case through Land of Lincoln, Prairie State or PILI or other local legal aid organization.
