A Primer for Helping Those in Need of Legal Assistance
PILI and its Sixth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee are co-hosting this CLE prorgam with the Campaign County Bar Association to prepare attorneys to volunteer at PILI’s Ask-A-Lawyer Help Desk in the Champaign County Courthouse.
PILI’s Sixth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee recently launched an Ask-A-Lawyer Desk in the Champaign County Courthouse. The desk is currently available twice a month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month. The desk is staffed by volunteer attorneys who meet with eligible self-represented litigants for up to 30 minutes to provide them with legal advice subject to a limited scope representation agreement. PILI is seeking volunteers for dates through December of 2019 and this CLE will provide an overview of some of the basic topics for which self-represented litigants are often seeking assistance at the help desk. Attendees will receive a Frequently Asked Questions document to better prepare them for the help that may be needed when the volunteer at the help desk. Lawyers who have volunteered at the help desk recently will also share their experiences.
