Increasing Engagement in Pro Bono: Highlights from the 2020 Corporate Pro Bono Roundtable

On February 26th, representatives from Illinois corporate legal departments met at the offices of Charles River Associates for PILI’s annual Corporate Pro Bono Roundtable. This year, the group discussed increasing engagement in corporate pro bono programs.

Overview of Illinois Free Legal Answers

PILI staff provided an overview of Illinois Free Legal Answers and Brian A. Abamont of State Farm talked about their experience hosting Free Legal Answers Clinics. He said they hosted monthly, hour-long clinics where attorneys got together to answer questions. Other attendees discussed their experience with the program, including AT&T who just hosted their first clinic. Other attendees asked questions and discussed how the program could foster community by partnering together to answer questions. Attorneys could do in-house clinics and partner with their colleagues or host a joint clinic with another corporation or law firm and answer questions together. Meaningfully Engaging Legal Support Staff in Pro Bono

Ken Johnston of AT&T Services, Inc. talked about his company’s efforts to make sure there was always meaningful volunteer opportunities for everyone at pro bono clinics. They discussed how volunteers didn’t need to be attorneys to do intake or they might be able to serve as translators. They said to make sure support staff is also serving on  pro bono committees and include them in recognition efforts for their work as well.

Tracking and Utilizing Data to Boost Your Pro Bono Program

Kimberly Barton of JPMorgan Chase & Company discussed an internal survey they did to find out what people wanted to work on for pro bono projects. They asked what types of pro bono projects attorneys were working on outside of work to see where they might be able to tap in and do what attorneys were really interested in. Allstate  discussed how they have been using the same internal tracking system for pro bono clients as paid clients to better track pro bono hours. He said this made it easier when pulling data for recognition and reporting.

Collaborating With Each Other to Enhance Pro Bono

Tracy Hannan from Exelon discussed how they had partnered on some clinics with other corporations. AT&T shared that it was through Exelon’s help that they launched their Wills for Heroes clinics. Kraft said they were hosting several CLEs in the near future about pro bono opportunities and were inviting other corporations. The group also discussed the listserv PILI created lastyear as a way to share ideas and create collaboration opportunities. Please send your contact information to Brent Page via email to be added to this Listserv.

PILI Receives New Grant from American Bar Endowment

PILI is excited to announce that we received a new grant of $20,000 from the American Bar Endowment (ABE) to purchase and implement Legal Server, a client management system. PILI started taking pro bono clients in 2016 and is now serving hundreds of clients a year through our pro bono opportunities. This grant will give us the tools we need to best serve these clients.

The American Bar Endowment (ABE) sponsors quality, affordable group insurance products, exclusively for ABA lawyer members. The unique charitable giving feature of each ABE-sponsored insurance plan gives ABA members the opportunity to donate any available dividends. The ABE mission is to make a difference by funding programs that advance the American justice system and the rule of law. The ABE established an Opportunity Grants Program, to support smaller, innovative programs and projects by eligible grantees that fit within that mission. An Opportunity Grant is intended to be a one-time award to start or enhance a program of law-related research, education, or public service projects.

We are incredibly grateful to ABE for this much needed support that will help PILI better serve its pro bono clients across Illinois!

PILI Alumni Spotlight: Davina DiPaolo, 2019 Law Student Intern

PILI is excited to welcome Davina DiPaolo to our Alumni Network Leadership Council as the 2019 Law Student Intern Alumni Representative. Each year, PILI appoints one Intern and one Fellow from the most recent class to serve on the Council for a two-year term.

Last summer, Davina was an Intern at the Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois where she conducted legal research and drafted internal research memoranda regarding the limitations of religious accommodations in the healthcare context. She did research for a case that is currently before the United States Supreme Court regarding Title VII sex discrimination (E.E.O.C v. R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, Inc.). Davina is a double PILI, having done a PILI Internship in 2018 at Lambda Legal where she did legal research, interviewed help desk callers and managed correspondence from incarcerated individuals.

“My fondest memories from my PILI experience include the relationships I forged with fellow interns and staff members from my two host organizations,” said Davina. “I’m still in contact with many of them, and I’m grateful for their collegiality and all that I’ve learned from them.”

Beyond her PILI Internships, Davina has been involved in other public interest work. As a student at the University of Minnesota Law School, she did an externship with a nonprofit called Gender Justice that promotes gender equality. She also served as a student attorney for the University of Minnesota’s Innocence Project clinic where she investigated claims of innocence from incarcerated individuals. During her 2L year, she was nominated for best brief and best oral argument for the University of Minnesota’s Civil Rights/Civil Liberties Moot Court Maynard Pirsig Competition. As a 3L, she is a visiting student at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and is serving on the board of Northwestern’s ACLU of Illinois student organization.

“My PILI experience allowed me to get a preview of the kind of work I have long aspired to do as a career, and affirmed my desire to work in the public interest sector,” said Davina. “I truly enjoyed the legal research I performed and learning how to analyze complex legal issues and develop creative arguments in developing areas of law.”

Davina attended many of PILI’s summer educational seminars on topics such as vicarious trauma, developing legal writing skills and understanding implicit bias. She says these programs helped her develop career skills and knowledge about public interest law to better help her increase equal access to justice. “Justice means access and equality for all,” said Davina.

PILI Alumni Spotlight: Sarah Lode, 2019 Graduate Fellow

PILI is excited to welcome Sarah Lode of Schiff Hardin LLP to our Alumni Network Leadership Council as the 2019 Graduate Fellow Alumni Representative. Each year, PILI appoints one Intern and one Fellow from the most recent class to serve on the board for a two-year term.

Last summer, Sarah did her PILI Fellowship at the UIC John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Clinic where she assisted veterans in their benefits appeals within the Department of Veterans Affairs and to the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. She also assisted veterans with discharge upgrades in the branches of military, specifically petitioning the Navy to award a veteran that was discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with an honorable discharge.

In one case, she was helping a veteran’s spouse who was asking for VA spousal death benefits after her husband had passed away. “My client consistently thanked me for listening to her and helping her tell her story,” said Sarah. “Justice is being able to be heard, to tell your story. It means having a seat at the table and being able to get to the place you need to be in order to have your story hear.”

Since her Fellowship, Sarah has been working as a first-year associate at Schiff Hardin in Chicago. She has been working on several pro bono cases including family law, immigration and civil rights matters. She’s looking forward to taking advantage of Schiff’s partnership with the Veteran’s Consortium to continue representing veterans who are trying to obtain benefits.

“By working as a PILI Fellow, I gained so much valuable experience in an area of pro bono that I am incredibly passionate about,” said Sarah. “With all the experience I gained from the clinic, I know that I will continue to help veterans for the rest of my career any way that I can.”

Sarah is constantly looking for ways to give back to the community, whether it’s with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, the National Immigrant Justice Center or the Diverse Attorney Pipeline Program. “I am so thrilled to work at a firm that understands that commitment to service enhances us as lawyers and drives us to continue to better ourselves zealously advocate for our clients,” said Sarah. “I am constantly looking for new ways to use my position as an attorney to help others.”

Happy Valentine’s Day from PILI Alumni

Happy Valentine’s Day! We spoke with one of our PILI Alumni Couples, John and Jami Gekas, about their experience as PILIs and how their commitment to service plays a role in their relationships. Jami was a PILI Fellow at Legal Aid Chicago in 2001 and is now a partner at Foley & Lardner. John was a PILI Fellow at Legal Aid Chicago in 2003 and is now a partner at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr.

Jami & John Gekas

How did you meet?

We met at Kirkland and Ellis, in 2002.  John was a summer associate in litigation and Jami was a first year associate in the IP practice group. We attended a group summer associate lunch at one of John’s favorite restaurants in Greektown, Athena. We discovered that we both had attended the University of Michigan, John for college and Jami for law school (Go Blue!), so we had an instant connection, in addition to our interest in the law. We were married four years later.

What was your favorite thing about being a PILI Fellow?

John: My favorite part of being a PILI Fellow was going to court every day. It was a great opportunity to get familiar with not just the formal procedures, but the informal practices of moving a case through the courts.

Jami: Being a PILI Fellow really helped me to keep things in perspective while studying for the bar exam.  Bar prep that summer was stressful, but at the end of the day, it was just a another standardized test, and I had been taking those my whole life!  Each of our clients in the family law group at the Legal Assistance Foundation (now known as Legal Aid Chicago), however, was trying to navigate our legal system, while simultaneously weathering major life changes and personal challenges.  The work I did that summer was not only interesting and educational, it was important – I was helping to make a real difference in the lives of our clients.  Whenever I would feel anxious about the bar exam, my work at LAF helped remind me of what really matters.

How has each of your commitment to service played a role in your lives and your relationship?

Jami: I got a lot out of my experience as a PILI Fellow, and it really set the foundation for me to continue to make pro bono work an important part of my practice. It was such a positive thing for me, so I urged John to be a PILI Fellow too, two years after I did it. His fierce dedication to his pro bono clients – which I first witnessed during his summer as a PILI Fellow – is one of the things I love the most about him! He always fights for what’s right, and never gives up. He was even recognized with a Pro Bono Service award from the Northern District of Illinois for his efforts in a civil rights case, where he served as appointed counsel on behalf of the plaintiff.  He makes me very proud, and I love that he is such a strong role model for our children.

John: Committing yourself to the service of others keeps you grounded, professionally and personally.
