Each year, PILI hosts a full-day orientation for PILI Interns and Fellows to kick-off the summer. This program serves as an introduction to the Illinois legal aid community and some of the struggles your clients face as well as the impact you can have. We also focus on developing practical skills that will be useful this summer and throughout your career.

This seminar will address how we can become more aware of our own assumptions, behaviors and impact, especially when we are interacting with people whom we (consciously and unconsciously) see as different from us. Unpacking the concept of implicit and unconscious bias to understand the “mental shortcuts” that we take that impact how we work with and value others is critical to serving legal aid clients with excellence.
Even under the best circumstances, legal aid and pro bono work can be incredibly stressful, challenging, and emotionally taxing, and may lead to secondary trauma. Join us for a fun, interactive, and accessible well-being check-in and education.
Hear from organizations and recent fellows about how they got their project green-lighted and give you a deeper dive into how to design and implement an Equal Justice Works or Skadden Fellowship.
