On August 25th, PILI’s Young Professionals Board hosted its Arcade for Legal Aid fundraiser. Originally planned for April, the event had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but thanks to the creativity and hard work of our YPB, the event was reimagined as a virtual gathering.
We didn’t know wide range of challenges we would soon face as a nation or the even greater difficulties those in need would face. But while this year has been totally unpredictable, the response itself has not been.
Illinois Free Legal Answers for Civil Appeals will be the first-ever virtual legal advice clinic for civil appeals in Illinois and will allow self-represented litigants to submit questions about their appeal through the Illinois Free Legal Answers platform (a project of the American Bar Association).
In December, we announced that our theme for 2020 would be “Defining Justice.” Little did we know what this year would have in store for all of us, and how much the notion of justice would be both emphasized and challenged.

In December 2019, we launched our theme for the year, “Defining Justice.” We emphasized this theme throughout our virtual Annual Pro Bono Reception. But the work of defining justice is far from over.
PILI’s 2020 Annual Pro Bono Reception was held over the course of the week of June 15th to19th and including daily video features to celebrate the tremendous pro bono work being done across Illinois.
Seven volunteers were named to PILI’s inaugural Pro Bono Volunteer Honor Roll, announced and recognized on Thursday, June 18, 2020 during PILI’s virtual Annual Pro Bono Reception.
This year, 47 law firms and corporations were named to the Recognition Roster.
