We are excited to announce Sarah J. Taylor as our new Program Manager. Sarah will be based in Champaign and will oversee all of PILI’s Pro Bono Program statewide including PILI’s Pro Bono Initiative, the Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committees and new pro bono opportunities such as the Conflict of Interest Pro Bono Referral Panel and the Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network.
“This is an extremely exciting time at PILI as we continue to grow our statewide pro bono program, working to provide access to our legal system to a greater number of people in need across Illinois,” said Michael G. Bergmann, PILI’s Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to have Sarah join the team to help usher in this new phase at PILI and help launch several new projects. Her practice as a private attorney as well as her pro bono service will provide a unique perspective within the role.”
Since 2004, Sarah has been an Associate Attorney with the Carbondale law firm of Barrett, Twomey, Broom, Hughes & Hoke, LLP. Her practice areas have included probate, real estate, estate planning, family, civil litigation, property tax appeals, and small business representation. She has also represented the State of Illinois in eminent domain cases as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Additionally, she has been an Adjunct Professor of Law with Southern Illinois University School of Law since 2010. She received her Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law.
An active pro bono attorney, Sarah has been a court-appointed guardian ad litem and mediator and also regularly handles pro bono cases. She has served on the board of directors for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation and as president of Dispute Resolution Institute. She is also an active member of the Illinois State Bar Association and has been responsible for coordinating the annual statewide ISBA High School Mock Trial Invitational, planning and presenting CLE programs, and authoring articles for the ISBA. In 2016, she received the Board of Governors Award from the ISBA.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to join PILI’s staff,” said Sarah, “and to help promote and expand pro bono opportunities in the legal community throughout the State of Illinois.”
