Kimball is a past PILI Board President, and he and Karen fund a Named Intern every summer through PILI at the Legal Council for Health Justice.

Kimball is a senior partner with the global law firm Winston & Strawn LLP. Throughout his 39 year career as a trial lawyer, Kimball has pioneered efforts for securing accessing to justice for low income individuals through the funding of innovative fellowship programs to provide debt relief to career public interest lawyers. He also has led public interest organizations, served in leadership positions at his law firm, exonerated a wrongfully convicted man, successfully challenged the Illinois Death Penalty, and argued civil rights cases before the United States Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Illinois.

Karen is a retired attorney who was previously worked at Vedder Price and with the Chicago Board of Education. Karen has extensive experience on not-for-profit Boards, and is passionate about education in particular. She is a founding board member and Vice President of The Montessori Network, which operates the public charter school, The Montessori School of Englewood. She is also on the Board of Equip for Equality, which provides services and advocates for people with disabilities throughout Illinois. She serves on its Finance Committee as well as the Parent Council for EFE’s Special Education Clinic. For nearly 20 years, she was on the Board of the Near North Montessori School, where she served as its President for four years. She is also an active member of her Church’s Philoptochos Society, which is dedicated to supporting and performing charitable work.

Kimball and Karen’s generous support of legal aid and other philanthropic causes in Illinois has a tremendous and lasting impact on people in need and on the nonprofit sector as a whole. We are grateful for their leadership in philanthropy, and we congratulate them on this much-deserved award!
