Attorneys in the Fifth Judicial Circuit were invited to a complimentary CLE program for pro bono attorneys organized by the Fifth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee.
The program included two panel presentations that will focus on the need for pro bono in the Fifth Judicial Circuit, ethical considerations in handling pro bono matters, and an in depth exploration of substantive areas of law in which low-income individuals often need pro bono representation.
PANEL I: Ethical Issues in Pro Bono Representation
This panel will provide an overview of the need for pro bono legal services, efforts to increase pro bono in the Fifth Judicial Circuit, and recent statewide efforts to expand access to justice. The discussion will detail specific aspects of the Illinois Supreme Court Rules of Professional Conduct relating to pro bono and access to justice. The panel will also explain the pro bono landscape in the Fifth Judicial Circuit and how attendees can help low-income and underrepresented individuals and families.

PANEL II: Hot Topics in Pro Bono
This panel of legal aid experts will discuss in depth some of the most common substantive areas of law where people of limited means need pro bono assistance, and practical issues and responses to questions that arise in these areas. The substantive areas of focus will include: representation of tenants in eviction cases, defense of small claims cases involving 3rd party debt-buyers, and advance directives (including recent changes to the law). Additionally, attendees will learn about a powerful and free tool that can assist them in their pro bono matters available at www.IllinoisProBono.org.
