The John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic provides free legal assistance to veterans in VA benefit appeals following an improper denial by the VA. The Clinic also provides legal assistance to veterans seeking to have their discharge status reclassified. Clinic staff are also involved in Veterans Treatment courts throughout Northern Illinois. Entering its tenth year of operation, the JMLS Veterans Clinic has a national reputation for advocacy and education on veteran and military service related issues. Housed in a renovated 19th century building on the JMLS campus, the JMLS Veterans Clinic is a leader in design and construction that is sensitive to PTSD.
In addition to representing veterans, the Veterans Clinic is also active in education, publication, and policy on veteran and active duty related topics including: VA benefits and appeals, the Uniformed Servicemembers Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, Treatment Courts, and underserved veteran populations. The Summer 2016 fellow worked on a policy project involving implementing the first Veterans Treatment Court in a rural community. The project also included a policy piece published in a well-respected policy journal.
A PILI fellow could expect to work on cases representing individual veterans as well as policy initiatives or education projects.
This agency is approved to host Graduate Fellows in 2017.
