The Domestic Violence Legal Clinic (DVLC) serves survivors of domestic violence who need legal assistance. We use our location at the Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse (555 W. Harrison, Chicago) to provide same-day services for people who need Orders of Protection. Through this same-day Order of Protection clinic, DVLC offers brief services case preparation, advice, and representation for domestic violence victims seeking orders of protection. DVLC represents some clients seeking an Emergency Order of Protection and continues to represent them for the duration of their cases, while others are offered representation at a later date. DVLC also provides comprehensive family law services, immigration assistance, and client support services. Additionally, DVLC assists clients with housing and employment issues and crime victim compensation applications. DVLC partners with the Domestic Violence Division in the DV Pro Bono Project, a volunteer effort aimed at large firm and corporate attorneys.
PILI Fellows and Interns are an integral part of our agency during the busy summer months and help to provide direct legal services for clients in DVLC’s Order of Protection Division. Fellows and Interns will spend part of their time working with pro se litigants seeking to file civil emergency orders of protection in the Domestic Violence Courthouse. Their duties include conducting client intakes and explaining the court process to clients, preparing court documents and client communications, accompanying pro se litigants to court, and performing legal research. If they receive their 711 License, Fellows and Interns may act as counsel under the direct supervision of an attorney.
This agency is approved to host a Law Student Intern during the summer. They are also approved to host Graduate Fellows.
