PILI cultivates a lifelong commitment to public interest law and pro bono service within the Illinois legal community to expand the availability of legal services for people, families and communities in need.
Our Vision
PILI envisions a legal community with a deeply rooted culture of service, where law students, lawyers and legal professionals at all stages of their careers engage in public interest law or pro bono work, and remain committed to addressing the unmet legal needs of the poor and underrepresented.

PILI Alumni Spotlight: Betsy Shuman-Moore, 1981 PILI Intern
Dedicated to the public interest from the start, Betsy served for seven years as a staff attorney and legal director for the Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities – the same organization where she completed her PILI Internship in 1981, before joining the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights where she now directs the Bias Violence and Fair Housing Projects. PILI Elects New Directors to Its Board of Directors
At its meeting on July 24, 2014, the PILI Board of Directors elected several new directors to its board. Those elected to serve included Karina Ayala-Bermejo of Metropolitan Family Services, Traci Braun of Exelon Corporation and Jonathan Jennings of Pattishall, McAuliffe, Newbury, Hilliard & Geraldson LLP.
